And if that wasn’t enough, Matt lead an amazing workshop for SCBWI Inland NW at the Argonne Library in Spokane Valley. Four of my students were able to attend (Thank you Gonzaga for footing the tuition bill!) Once again, the event was motivating, insightful, inspiring,—yes, really. So much to take away about dialogue, voice and making it all work.
As Matt sat in front of our workshop group I thought, this guy is the epitome of balance. A writer who has written five really great YA novels, a writer who has so much to teach and can deliver it so well. A writer who goes all over the country not just for the fame and fortune but because he really believes in the audience he writes for and the kids he writes about. And he believes in books, in reading, in education. Even as Entertainment Weekly was boosting sales and getting him in front of a much wider audience, he was calmly answering questions from nineteen year olds, signing books, talking about basketball and college. Being real.
